May. 22nd, 2008 10:32 pmWork today was particularly gah. I had to buy gift mugs, cmu chocolates, and wrapping supplies at the bookstore in the morning with minimal instructions, and as an indecisive/worried person, it was a tad stressful. Then everyone in the department went to a long-ass meeting off campus and locked their doors, and I had evidently worked too efficiently in the first part of my time there, so I was left with a lot of time on my hands to sit and answer old MSC emails and email Molley and my advisor and sit on livejournal and otherwise try to figure out what to do with myself, that too-quiet girl with the unruly hair (sticking up in the back) and the purple scarf because why is it so cold?
Most exciting thing that happened (other than watering plants, scanning another proposal, filing, and unpacking a shipment of office supplies into the supply closet (!)) was a grad student came in with a pen drive and wanted to print two theses on our printer so the diagrams would be in color. She studies computer simulations of metal microstructures, she said, and she talked to me a while about MSE. She forgot her pen drive, though, and I sent the email to that effect to someone with the same last name as her and a very similar-sounding first name... that wasn't the right person. Embarrassing! Got sorted out before I left for errands, at least.
A few days ago I saw them putting in little cute roses near Wean because the tulips were past their prime. You can still, however, enjoy headless tulips in front of Hamburg. I waved at goob on my way to the potato chip and passed Shawn's office a little later. I wonder who else's work-lairs I will unwittingly stumble across...
At six I made it just barely on time, muttering obscenities at the incessant traffic which had prevented me from crossing the street, for dance. And it was so good! It's a better crowd than last night, and I can't even explain why. Feels right. The best people just do, the bastards.
I am a fan of the music she picks out. I think that also irked me about the accompanist... Mark used to do a drumbeat for our contractions floor section, and that worked, for beginner modern (I remember the pattern fondly), but I am much more a fan of random-ass music selections than stuff one human generates on-site for dance classes. This ian man also didn't give us long enough intros/lead ins/whatever they're called again. So there was bluesy jazzy stuff during warmup that reminded me of LaMichael's old modern warmups. Next there was something a leetle more upbeat... I couldn't tell what the words were, just that it was in french. Then the combination was to this great quirky song that I would costume in spandex and capes and robin-esque masks, that went something like hey mr. nanana... nananana.... and eventually said something about gonna need a nurse.... end up in a hearse. I can't find it online and tried to transcribe the melody at least, based on the notes I figured out on a silly online java-piano, but that was a load of bs anyway and I don't feel like dealing with rests and time signatures and shit, music is my brother's domain, so I sucked it up and nanana'd it here. *hides*
... You have to trust me on this then. It's a fun song, I promise, and the dance was pretty awesome. Lots of sweaty floor work. I'm not going to do that for you at any time, but take my word for it. I keep saying this, but I'm looking forward to going back. Saturday!
I love coming up the stairs nervous and seeing all their furniture rearranged and being welcomed. This evening was the first time I took a night class there, so I got to see all the dangling light bulbs illuminated for the first time as well. Two above the house band alcove are red. I never would have known. I feel like maybe I also like it because it's free. Aside from doing cooler things, I also spent more money than I had originally set out to yesterday, so I will have to try to not keep doing that for a few days.
Apparently tomorrow there's a breaking class in the space. tee hee. If I figure out what time it is, I'm going, even though the weekday buses fill me with anguish and pain. Anguish and pain, my friends. I'll just have to plan better.
