Mar. 29th, 2007 05:25 pmSo, folks. We're down to the Final Four.
(Not counting, for good reasons, University of Texas at Dallas and University of Alabama)
I didn't apply there... I had specific ideas about where I wanted to live during my college years, and that's probably what screwed me over in the admissions process. In retrospect, I probably should have applied to various things in California or to Rose-Hulman. Anyway... I kind of feel like I might have some kind of fatal freak accident before I go to college... weird hunch... maybe it's just all the stress, so it still doesn't seem pressingly important yet. The deadline is there, sure, but... I don't understand life.
Figure I can make the most out of the academics anywhere.
UCF/ Burnett
UF... still have to find out about their honors thingy (3/30 HONORS.)
Northeastern Honors
Carnegie Mellon
+/-
Mainly, I want to avoid Stefan S & M. I don't know if he's been accepted at NEU yet, but if they accepted Holly, they might accept him.
I have to resubmit FAFSA, redo CMU's thing and hand-redo the CSS for Northeastern, so any Financial Aid info I may or may not have received is probably wrong, now that my parents finally completed their '06 Income tax return.
UCF's email guy is really punctual and responds personally to all my I have to miss this event because of Congres and this one because of Commissioner's Academic Challenge emails.
But my dad's beer guzzling underage cousin goes to UCF, and so will Caleb. It doesn't look good, but its engineering crap is reputedly good, and the honors program is small enough to be good. AND IT'S FREE!
UF kind of disgusts me, but its academics seem pretty good. I'll get to skip all the lame video freshman courses. It's probably close to free, if not free. Another minus... big sports scene. Seems too big and Gainesvilley, and the alums are scary about the GATORRRR thing (exhibit "A", PattyJo).
Northeastern is what I'm currently leaning toward because it's in BOSTON. There's a subway with stops everywhere, and students can get into the MFA free. A lot of other crap is discounted for students (still have to find out what, the website is kind of ehh ehh), and I'll live in winter for once. I have visited campus, and it's nice. There's a nightclub on campus... err? I saw their robot when I was there. I can stay at my grandma's if necessary and visit all those relatives who haven't seen me since I was 6 because they didn't want to run the risk of seeing my grandma. Mary and Bruce can help me move my stuff up there, and I can visit Sarah and Hannah and Drew. It's bigger than CMU. NU's dance company looks decent, NUCALLS looks sweet, I made Honors (which means shiny new dorm), their engineering thing is good, co-op is good cos I'm poor, and I can work at MIT if not GO there, which would make grad school a better shot. Looks like I'd have an easier time switching majors, if I wanted to. Vegetarian stuff is available, but there's FOOTBALL (not as bad as UF). Probably affordable, and they already offered me a partial scholarship, but I'll see when the FinAid is re-sent.
Carnegie Mellon is cool cos it has Tech Half and Art Half. It's about twice as big as MIT, which is still pretty small, especially compared to UF. They too have a dance thingy (which seems a bit more new age and icky), but nothing like NUCALLS, as far as I can ascertain. Could always start something. Their clubs list is in excel format, which sucks. I can't do electrical/computer engineering because it's uber exclusive and I didn't think to apply for that before taking E & M. But, the people are there, so I can at least take the basic classes. Jim has family in Pittsburgh, and I suppose I could take a train or something, but I need to do some more research before I decide. CMU, however, sounds most fancy of all the names of schools to which I was accepted. It's suitably wintry and stuff... and seems cool. There are soapbox races and fence-painting. The whole kilt/Scottie dog business really puts me off... school spirit, berk. Somebody should give Sean the newsflash that school spirit is a turnoff unless you're a cheerleader or a footballer.
CMU kids get free access to :
Carnegie Museum of Art
Carnegie Museum of Natural History
Carnegie Science Center & Sportsworks
The Andy Warhol Museum
The Mattress Factory
The National Aviary
The Frick
Phipps Conservatory & Botanical Gardens
The Mattress Factory and The Frick sound pretty interesting... but I like art and birds and rocks and trees also.
Input? I still have a lot of research and waiting for cost info before I can proceed with my official deliberations/analysis (due at the end of April). Kind of disappointing, but ehh.
3/30. CMU seems best. Hope I can afford.
